International adoption

INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION PROCESS (US, CANADA, EUROPE)

For international adoptions we can only send dogs to cities and countries where we have a partner rescue in place. We are currently sending dogs to the US (LA, NEW YORK, BOSTON, CHICAGO, SAN FRANCISCO, SEATTLE) CANADA (TORONTO, VANCOUVER(ALL OF BC)), EUROPE (AUSTRIA, GERMANY, UK). For now these are the only cities and countries we can send dogs to, but we are always looking for new partner rescues in new cities so if your city/country isn’t mentioned don’t loose hope.

STEP ONE: To start the international adoption process please send us a message on Facebook. If you do not have Facebook then please email us at ypapypap@gmail.com. In your message please mention that you are interested in adoption, where you are based and the dog you are interested in. If you do not have a specific dog in mind we will able to recommend you a dog based on your application. We will send you a application form after we have verified your location. After you have filled in the application form please send it back to our email.

STEP TWO: After we have received you application we will review it and forward it to our partner rescues for review. (For Canadian Adopters our partner rescue will reach out to you directly for a interview after receiving the application from us). Once we receive feedback from our partner rescues we will decide whether or not to approve or reject the application. You will hear from us either way.

STEP THREE: If you are approved you need to decided whether you want the dog flown with a flight volunteer or via cargo. (The experience is exactly the same for the dog). If you choose to fly the dog with a flight volunteer it is much cheaper but it can take up to six months to the US and around a year to Canada. Cargo reservations can be booked much sooner and you will most likely have the dog within a few months. (Costs are below) Once you have decided on the travel we will either add you to the waiting list for a flight or contact the cargo company to arrange a reservation. (Due to the flight volunteer wait time we require a $300 deposit for Canadian Adopters. This is non refundable)

STEP FOUR: Whilst your new friend is waiting for their flight we will try and move them into foster homes. However we do have trouble finding foster homes for larger dogs as most people live in tiny apartments in Korea. We do sometimes send them to doggy boarding schools so that they can socialise with other doggies. If we are unable to move them from the shelter, we will try to keep you updated with photos and videos. We have dog walking events every weekend and our volunteers always take lots of lovely photos.

STEP FIVE: Before the flight all dogs are spayed/neutered (unless they are too young), given a mircochip, and all required jabs. All the medical paperwork will be sent you your email along with the invoice. On the day of the flight we bring the dogs to the airport and take them for a walk and get all of their energy out before securing them in their crates. We ALWAYS send dogs with lots of fresh water, blankets and peepads. They also arrive in a collar and with a leash.

STEP SIX: When the dog arrives in the airport in your country. You will be expected to meet them at the airport unless arranged differently with our partner rescue. Each airport is different and timings also differ greatly. Once you have your dog please open the cage very slowly and carefully making sure the leash is securely attached. The dogs may be scared and try to escape.

STEP SEVEN: Once the dog arrives in your home they will be very confused, stressed and overwhelmed. It is important to give them their own space so they can decompress. Some of these dogs have never entered into a home before. Also please remember the rule of three. After the dog is all settled in you can finally enjoy your new family member.

Puppies: We do adopt out puppies from our shelter. Puppies have to be at least 16 weeks old (Four months) to be able to fly as they need to have all of their jabs including their rabies jab. We never send puppies under 16 weeks old and to be save puppies are usually 5-6 months old when they fly. If you are looking for a younger puppy you should not adopt from abroad.

International Travel Expenses

Due to Covid-19 airlines are raising costs and flights are difficult to find.

Country Cargo Costs Cargo Timeframe Flight Volunteer Costs Flight Volunteer Timeframe
USA USD $800 to $3,000 Around 1 month USD $500 + flight cage Around 6 months to a year.
Canada CAD $1500 to $4000 Around 1 month

 CAD $700

12-18 months.
Europe EUR 1500 to 3000 + flight cage + EUR 90 for a blood test 4 to 6 months EUR 400 + flight cage + EUR 90 for a blood test 6 months to a year.

  • Cargo costs and the flight cage are dependent on the size of the dog.
  • All timescales are from the date the adoption has been confirmed.

Travelling by cargo is more expensive than flying as accompanied baggage, but has the advantage in that the dog can fly at your earliest convenience.

Flying as accompanied baggage with a flight volunteer is entirely dependent on the availability of persons willing to take the dog as accompanied baggage and there may be considerable delay in completing the adoption.

Our adoptions team will advise if any flight volunteers are available or become available during the waiting process.

If you are interested in an international adoption, please contact us first to confirm that there is a Rescue Partner available in your area.

YPAP is no longer able to perform independent international adoptions without the assistance of a Rescue Partner.
